Maonan Fenlong Festival

In Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County, there is the largest group of Maonan. On the first day after summer solstice in the lunar calendar, people there celebrate Fenlong Festival, hoping for abundant, nourishing rain. It is said that this day is the time when the dragon lords, gods of rain, head to different places and rain down. On this day, Maonan shamans wear Nuomian masks and perform Nuowu dance. During the festival, you are able to feel the thrill from the most primal Maonan ritual. You might be scared by it, but you’ll also be amazed by it.
